Finding Your True North

5 Nov 2017

“True North is the internal compass that guides you successfully through life. It represents who you are as a human being at your deepest level. It is your orienting point – your fixed point in a spinning world….

Your True North is based on what is most important to you, your most cherished values, your passions and motivations, the sources of satisfaction in your life” – Bill George

I’ve procrastinated, stalled, avoided and generally behaved like a small child not wanting to play for long enough!

The time has come to start blogging again and to say WELCOME to my new website!

I’ve been through a long period now where I didn’t really feel I had anything relevant or important enough to say, I’m sure most bloggers and writers have these times.

But during the long break my focus, attention and motivators have shifted and evolved and I now find myself back to a point where I want to talk, to share, to muse, to vent, to laugh and maybe even a little crying with you all.

Yep! I’ve found my voice again.

I’m older than last time you heard from me. Hopefully a little wiser. I’ve been through some exciting times and some shitty times. I’ve matured and developed new passions, interests and priorities and I’m now standing on the edge of what I feel is a really exciting time in my life.

Let me take you back first to when I embarked on my fitness career. I was squarely in the middle of the ‘yummy mummy’ brigade. Juggling young children, career, home duties and the like. As such, my focus was very much on helping women just like me at a similar stage in life with similar obstacles to overcome and self-imposed barriers to getting fit and healthy.

Fast forward 10 years, I have since aged and I believe that the women I can most help have also matured and moved on to the next stage in life. Generally we have older children and maybe more demanding careers. But we are also hopefully wiser and our priorities have been constantly changing in line with our family’s needs. We understand that the time has come to start taking better care of ourselves again and we are trying to establish just what is important at this stage in our life, what brings us joy and happiness, what is our ‘true north’?

Today I’m now a woman who, by society’s rules, would be considered to be on the ‘wrong side’ of 45. North of 45 is an interesting age as it would appear that we are too old to be attractive and admired (by either sex) and too young to be considered ready for retirement and lawn bowls. The “invisible” demographic I like to refer to it as and yet such a large population that it’s crazy to ignore!!

Until recent years the subject of my age hasn’t really been of concern to me. I’ve never felt my age and have worked hard to maintain a fit and healthy exterior that reflected more accurately the younger ‘interior’ I was feeling. In fact I really hit my stride when at 44 I was lucky enough to be chosen as the Oxygen Magazine 2014 Cover girl competition winner.

However this lack of concern for my age has changed in the past 12 months. I realised that for my own sanity I needed to stop looking at the 25-35 year old #fitspiration stars for inspiration as I was a good 15+ years older than these girls! So I began to research women in the fitness industry closer to my own age that I could draw on for inspiration and motivation.

What I discovered in this process was there is a ridiculous under-representation of women in the fitness industry who fall into the “North of 45” demographic who are at the same life stage as myself.

Yes, there are PLENTY of amazing and inspiring role models in the younger demographics, let’s call them ‘South of 40”. But the ‘invisible’ north of 45 role models are very few and far between. Why is this? Where do we all disappear to? Is there a “has been #fitspo nation” out there ruminating about times long past?

I really feel that society as a whole is ignoring this amazing group of women filled with life experience, wisdom, knowledge, life stories, and advice simply because they are not perceived as marketable to the masses who are attracted to youth, beauty, perfection and the seemingly ‘ageless’ woman.

Can we just mention here for the record that there are plenty of women north of 45 who are rocking AMAZING physiques that should be admired, applauded and celebrated!

So my story now is changing direction a little and taking a new path. My day to day ‘job’ and focus will still be on training my clients, running boot camps and helping women of all ages and fitness levels, become the fittest, happiest and healthiest versions of themselves.

But I’m also really excited to embark on a new campaign. One of exploration and maybe even a little bit of ‘trail blazing’, if I dare to call it that.

This website and my blog will be more dedicated to helping those “north of 45” feel comfortable, confident, proud and fabulous about themselves regardless of the number on their birth certificate.

I want to help women embrace that number and own it for all the positive attributes it brings into their lives rather than focusing on all the negative connotations associated with ‘getting older’.

I aim to champion those that are proud of their age, their looks, their bodies and their work and celebrate the gift that getting older is.

I don’t have a perfect body by society’s current standards, I don’t have a perfect life, I don’t eat perfectly 24/7 and I don’t always have the perfect attitude to situations and people. I am very much human.

But I am north of 45 and I am proud of who I am and where I’m going…..yes, I am still GOING!  I have not stopped simply because of a number, nor because I fall into an age group that society deems as no longer relevant or attractive.

And I want to help other women who have spent so much of their lifetime already ‘fighting’ with their bodies, with food, with feelings of inadequacy and with trying to reverse the ageing process. I want to help them learn how to surrender and embrace their age, their bodies and to find their true north.

I hope that you follow me on my journey, and that maybe if you are a 'North of 45er' you are inspired to begin your own journey to find your “true north”.

Let’s travel together.
